It is located in the little village of Wush Wush. It is a washing station owned and operated by Dinkalem Ademe and his wife Sofiya, who source their coffee from about 2500 smallholder farms in the surrounding area. This specific lot, from Dinkalem’s Wush Wush site, consists of local landrace varieties, naturally adapted from the Wush Wush variety near the Agama River that conveys a classic “Washed Ethiopia” profile of bright citrus and warm florals, with some lovely fruit.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1004/9428/products/DT_Coffee_YR_BC-Retail_5d03af1b-b5f1-4f06-ae91-97f5dcd9efff.png?v=1650560758
small-talk
Small Talk

Coffee Story
I know I’m not speaking for everyone here, but with all the newest in double anaerobic, co-fermentations, natural, black honey, yeast-inoculated innovations in specialty coffee, sometimes all I want is a really, really good medium roast. It's named after the community's cliffside setting and signifies the progress and determination required to grow coffee in such rugged terrain. With the help of three producer leaders and our importing partner, Mountain Harvest, the Makali farmers have access to a drying shed, pulping facility, and clean water for coffee processing. Some farmers in the Makali Community have been using a pulping and drying facility provided by Mountain Harvest and received training and support to learn this processing stage and produce high-quality parchment. The decision to process the coffee themselves instead of selling the cherry to be processed stems from the fact that having processed parchment provides tangible savings for the farmers' families. This is a primary focus of Mountain Harvest's work in the region, aiming to build resilient supply chains and empower farmers to become experts in farm-based businesses.

This specific organic-certified lot is grown at 1700 MASL by 140 smallholder farmers as part of the Makali Community on the southern slope of Mount Elgon. Unfortunately, as is the case in these regions, small-scale producers often sell their coffee cherries to intermediaries, receiving low prices that hinder reinvestment in their farms, families, and community.
